Canterbury are close to wrapping up top spot in the round robin phase of rugby's NPC

The Red and Blacks lead Taranaki 27-14 in the closing stages of their match in Christchurch - with victory helping them go back past Otago and gain the number one berth for the playoffs.

Taranaki will stay fifth, and miss out on home advantage for the quarterfinals.

Earlier - Counties Manukau went past Northland to claim the eighth and final playoffs slot, with a 49-41 win over Tasman in Nelson.
