A proposed traffic light system for dealing with Covid-19 is being described as not fit for purpose

A proposed traffic light system for dealing with Covid-19 is being described as not fit for purpose

It would replace the current levels system and Cabinet will discuss it on Monday.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says it's about incorporating vaccination certificates into a framework of restrictions, based on risk.

She's held a Zoom meeting to get feedback from health experts.

Several people familiar with the meeting told the Weekend Herald the experts say the new system will only be useful once enough of the population is fully vaccinated, which could be months away.

They also say that will be the only time when lockdown restrictions won't be needed, and that it's premature to reveal it to the public if it's not going to be implemented for some time.
