Calls for a firmer regulatory approach to recreational nitrous oxide use

Calls for a firmer regulatory approach to recreational nitrous oxide use

New Medsafe advice says nitrous products -- or nangs -- sold for recreational use, now fall under the Psychoactive Substances Act, meaning potential fines or jail time.

Health Minister Dr Shane Reti says the Government is looking at how other countries are policing it for their future strategy.

Drug Foundation policy director Dr Jacek Kolodziej says that needs to include good age controls, and ensuring larger canisters aren't as available.

He says there's very little legislative views for the large volumes, and higher use is associated with higher level of risk.
