Professor Piri Sciascia - the Government House kaumatua, has died

Governor-General Dame Patsy Reddy says Dr Sciascia was much beloved and respected - and his wise counsel and friendship will be sorely missed.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also paid tribute to the revered kaumatua, saying she was honoured to have Dr Sciascia as an advisor and grateful for all that her taught her.

Ms Ardern says he was steeped in mana, and will be widely remembered for his achievements in education, performing arts, public service and the pivotal roles he played in Treaty Settlements.
