New Zealand officials will be balancing urgency and safety -- as they weigh up each coronavirus vaccine

New Zealand officials will be balancing urgency and safety -- as they weigh up each coronavirus vaccine

The Government has no plans to fast-track vaccines that been approved overseas -- like the Pfizer Biontech vaccine that British regulators have approved for emergency use.

Instead, each vaccine will need to be approved separately by Medsafe based on the latest available clinical information.

College of GPs medical director Bryan Betty says while Medsafe isn't likely to pick up any issues that other regulators haven't, it's better to be safe than sorry.

He says it's a second barrier of safety, that should be able to be completed as soon as possible.
