Wanaka residents have been left stunned at the fees for seeking urgent after hours medical care,

The Otago town's medical centre provides on-call services until 11pm, with overnight services provided by Central Otago Health Services Limited until 8am.

A former ambulance officer says he was quoted 700-dollars for a 15-minute consultation, while another says she was looking at fees upwards of one-thousand dollars.

Wanaka Medical's Michael James, says their rate is based on how much time their clinician spends with the patient -- with enrolled patients aged over 21 paying 280-dollars per 30 minutes.

He says patients with concerns over fees are being encouraged to reach out.
