Kiwi scientists say their research could allow early detection of dementia

Kiwi scientists say their research could allow early detection of dementia

Otago University researchers have developed an algorithm that gauges the risk, from an MRI.

It draws on data from the Dunedin Study, which has followed more than one-thousand Kiwis since the 1970s.

Study director, Professor Moana Theodore, says the disease is incurable, but preventive measures offer hope.

She says certain strategies and lifestyle changes can improve quality of life - and even slow progression.
