    The final countdown's begun for Interislander's Aratere - with her last trip across the Cook Strait announced for August 18

    The ferry's being retired to let work begin on port infrastructure, for new vessels arriving in 2029.

    Demolition will begin on Aratere's specialised dock in Picton this year.

    Meanwhile, Kaiarahi will return to service with a fresh lick of paint, applied in Singapore dry dock.

    Interislander General Manager Duncan Roy says Aratere will sit at its Wellington berth while sale options are considered.
