It's the subject of great debate as to whether it should be moved out of Auckland - but this weekend the city's port will be open for people to take a rare look inside

Ports of Auckland is welcoming families inside the usually gated grounds, as part of the Anniversary Weekend SeePort festival.

Adults can climb the highest crane for charity and one child's colouring competition entry will be picked to be painted on a new tugboat.

Port of Auckland's Matt Ball says the port is a key part of the city's heritage.

He says it's usually locked up for safety reasons meaning people can't see their port - which is why they enjoy opening it up once a year.
