Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has hailed Catherine O'Hara as a "legend"

The actress was born in Toronto, Canada, and the Prime Minster took to social media to pay tribute to her after she passed away aged 71.

Carney wrote on X: "I join Canadians and fans across the world in mourning the loss of Catherine O'Hara.

"Over 5 decades of work, Catherine earned her place in the canon of Canadian comedy - from SCTV to Schitt's Creek.

"Canada has lost a legend. My thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those who loved her work on screen. She will be dearly missed. (sic)"

O'Hara died on Friday (30.01.26) at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness, and tributes have been flooding in since her passing was announced.

Macaulay Culkin - who starred alongside O'Hara in the Home Alone film franchise - previously paid a heartfelt tribute to the actress.

Alongside two throwback photos, the actor wrote on Instagram: "Mama.

    "I thought we had time.

    "I wanted more.

"I wanted to sit in a chair next to you.

    "I heard you.

"But I had so much more to say.

    "I love you.

    "I'll see you later. (sic)"

One of the photos was taken from when Macaulay and the actress starred together in the Home Alone film franchise. The second photo was taken in 2023, when the late actress supported Macaulay at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony.

O'Hara - who played the actor's on-screen mom - said that day: "Home Alone was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation ... the reason families all over the world can't let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin."

Meanwhile, David Furnish hailed the movie star as a "brilliant actress and comedian".

The 63-year-old filmmaker - who is married to Sir Elton John - wrote on the photo-sharing platform: "Absolutely devastated to hear of the passing of Catherine O'Hara. A brilliant actress and comedian. She's kept me roaring with laughter for DECADES. From Lola Heatherton on @sctv in Canada in the 70's to Moira Rose on @schittscreek today - and all the roles in between. I've loved everything she's done. How brilliant to leave such a legacy of artistic excellence and laughter. #CatherineOHara #RIP (sic)"
