David Beckham is "delighted" to be part of Salford City FC's new ownership group

The 50-year-old former England captain and his ex-teammate Gary Neville are leading a new ownership group at the League Two soccer team

David - who joined Manchester United at the age of 14 - said in a statement: "I grew up in Salford ... I have such fond memories of my time living there and the place and its people played such an important part in my early life in football."

David first became a shareholder in Salford in 2019, and the soccer icon is "delighted" to be leading the club into its next chapter.

He said: "Salford City is at the heart of its community ... it has a rich history and I am delighted to be a part of the next chapter."

David is also the co-owner of the American soccer team Inter Miami.

And the sports legend recently described owning the team as the "biggest challenge" of his career.

He told People: "When we first announced it, I thought we'd have the team up and running in a few years."

David's ambitions for the club faced a series of setbacks and delays, before he managed to get the project off the ground. However, he's been thrilled by Inter Miami's progress in recent years.

He said: "It's been the biggest challenge that I've had in my career and my business life, but it's been the most rewarding."

David played an instrumental role in attracting Lionel Messi to Inter Miami, and he's delighted to have the soccer legend on his team.

He shared: "Everything has changed for us. We've quadrupled everything on one signing - the difference is incredible. The difference on the field, off the field...

"On the field is obvious because obviously he's quality, and ... the other young players are gaining knowledge from him, but also, they're getting better from them which is one of the reasons why you bring these players in.

"Off the field, the amount of interest we've had globally as a club, the numbers that we have coming in, the new stadium that we're building, the new sponsors that come in and are interested - it's all of those things."
