From today, three cameras in Auckland will capture images of drivers - looking for mobile phone users

It's part of a six-month Transport Agency trial, costing around 380-thousand-dollars.

Later in the trial, the cameras will also look for people not wearing seatbelts.

As police aren't involved there won't be any enforcement.

Waka Kotahi's Kane Patena says the Agency wants to understand the scale of the issue.

He says in 2020 there were 24 fatal crashes and 111 serious injuries, where distraction was a contributing factor.
