The weekend holiday road toll is already at three, less than 24 hours into the long weekend

The weekend holiday road toll is already at three, less than 24 hours into the long weekend

A motorcyclist died in Upper Hutt last night, someone who was in a car accident in Gisborne lost their life early this morning and a person has died in a crash at Tekapo this morning.

Traffic has been heavy in the usual hotspots ... especially heading North from Auckland -- between Puhoi and Warkworth.

The Highway heading down to the Coromandel has also been busy -- and the Kapiti Coast has seen a lot of traffic from people trying to get out of Wellington.

Acting National Manager for road policing, Peter McKennie, says patience is key this weekend.

He says make sure you lift your foot off the accelerator a bit, drive to the conditions and get through the journey safely -- and if you arrive a few minutes late it doesn't matter.
