The mercury has plunged across the South Island in a second day of sub-zero temperatures

The mercury has plunged across the South Island in a second day of sub-zero temperatures

Otago's Middlemarch is New Zealand's coldest place today, clocking an impressive minus-11 degrees.

MetService meteorologist Angus Hines says even for that area, that's particularly cold.

He does say there's the chance things will get colder, when the region experiences a second cold snap usually around late July, early August.

Mosgiel reached minus eight, and Queenstown, a nippy minus four.

Dunedin airport has broken the record for its coldest June day... at a bone chilling minus 8.6.

Police and Waka Kotahi are sounding a note of caution, as motorists hit the roads for the long weekend.

Warnings in place include icy surfaces on the State Highway between Twizel and Lake Tekapo.
