A South Auckland police station has closed after a fire broke out overnight, starting in the server room just before 1am

It didn't spread, but sprinklers caused extensive water damage throughout the building.

Investigators suspect it was caused by an electrical fault.

Police says there'll be minimal impact as staff operate in neighbouring stations.
