Invercargill's unveiled a new attraction - paying homage to one of the world's rarest reptiles

Invercargill's unveiled a new attraction - paying homage to one of the world's rarest reptiles

Te Moutere Tuatara Island, formally opened yesterday - with a free opening ceremony kicking off today.

The new enclosure is designed to enhance our guardianship of the native species - while appealing to both locals and visitors.

Parks and Recreation Strategic Advisor Chris Bowen, says the facility houses a maximum of 17 tuatara - and includes burrows to ensure they're well kept.

He says there's a lab attached to ensure ongoing health checks and requirements are undertaken on site.
