Worldline NZ data shows core retail spending was down 0.6 percent this Boxing Day compared to last year.
Data from earlier in the month, shows spending at non-food and beverage retailers dropped 4.1 percent.
First Retail Managing Director Chris Wilkinson says the trends have been shifting - with things like Black Friday coming into the mix, and the lead up to Christmas getting stronger.
