Formula One's Sergio Perez has copped a three-place grid penalty for the Spanish Grand Prix as a sanction because he returned to the pits with a damaged car during the Canadian event

The Red Bull driver retired on lap 53 after a crash which dinged the front and rear wings on one side.

He limped to pit lane leaving a Hansel and Gretel trail of carbon fibre parts on the way back, which were deemed dangerous by the stewards.

Red Bull confirmed they advised Perez to return to avoid a safety car, which could have jeopardised teammate Max Verstappen's leading position.
