The pair had contacted Police on Tuesday afternoon from a hut where they were sheltering.
But five days of harsh weather delayed rescue attempts, until this morning - when they were brought back to base in a couple of hours.
The Department of Conservation, says the climbers showed good judgement, stayed strong - and were well prepared for the weather.
It encourages all visitors to the backcountry to have contingency options in case a rescue isn't possible.
The two climbers are being taken to Christchurch Hospital for injuries - but are in good spirits.
