    Ongoing efforts in Southland and Otago to control multiple vegetation fires


    Crews are responding to blazes which began this afternoon in Mataura, Palmerston, and Balclutha.

    10 trucks and two helicopters were on site in Mataura today, tackling a blaze which has closed State Highway 96 overnight between State Highway 1 and Waimumu.

    10 trucks and three helicopters have responded in Palmerston, while around 30 firefighters, two helicopters and a digger are on site in Balclutha.

    Fire and Emergency says windy conditions caused them all to spread quickly, and urges people not to light any outdoor fires.
