Heavy rain watches and warnings cover Northland, Auckland and Coromandel until early Thursday.
Power's been cut in parts of Northland and Auckland, with Northpower's map showing about 500 homes have lost supply - mostly in Mangawhai.
MetService Metereologist John Law says there's a moderate chance the warnings could be upgraded to red - the highest level.
He says this much rain could be enough to cause flooding and slips and make driving dangerous.
