Bill Clinton has been hospitalised with a fever

The former United States President, 78, is under "observation" after being taken ill on Monday (23.12.24), just two days before Christmas

His deputy chief of staff Angel Ureña said in a statement on X, formerly Twitter: "President Clinton was admitted to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital this afternoon for testing and observation after developing a fever.

"He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving."

A source has insisted the situation is "not urgent", and described Clinton as "alert".

The insider told NBC News: "The former president will be fine. He developed a fever and wanted to be checked out. He is awake and alert."

Meanwhile, Ureña later added that the former president is "fine".

He told CNN: "He remains in good spirits and deeply appreciates the excellent care he is receiving."

The outlet also said that Ureña told them Clinton expects to be back home in time for Christmas.

Last month, Clinton - who is grandfather to his daughter Chelsea Clinton's kids Charlotte, 10, Aidan, eight, and five-year-old Jasper - insisted that being a former US president is sometimes secondary to the "powerful position" of "being Pop-Pop of the family".

He joked to 'Live With Kelly and Mark' last month: "Depends on what day it is. Some days [being a former president is] the least most powerful. But it has the longest cool list.

Clinton previously opened up about a typical Christmas for the family, which "always" sees him and his wife Hillary visit Chelsea and her children for the holiday season.

He told People magazine back in 2021: "We always go down on Christmas Eve, spend the night and have Christmas Day with them.

"And I think it's the right thing to do, intergenerationally. And then we normally go to the train display at the Bronx Zoo. It's great."
