Economists are still expecting a drop in interest rates - despite strong headwinds in the global trade environment

US President Donald Trump's slapping a minimum 10-percent tariff on imports.

The move's seen world stocks plummet - with big brands like Nike, Apple and Target sinking more than nine percent.

ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley says the Reserve Bank will likely still cut interest rates by 25 basis point - as local inflation appears under control.

He says the Reserve Bank, like everybody else, is waiting on the sidelines to see what carnage comes out of the train-wreck from Donald Trump.
