The teen - whose name is suppressed -- stabbed 16-year-old Enere Taana-McLaren on Great King Street in May 2024.
The jury took more than two days to return a unanimous verdict on the lesser charge of manslaughter.
During sentencing, the victim's older brother called the killer a coward, and told him the family wished him nothing but misery, and would never forgive him.
Justice Robert Osborne had a starting point of seven years imprisonment, but gave discounts for the teen's youth, prospects of rehabilitation, time spent on bail, and remorse.
