James Van Der Beek was reportedly working on a memoir prior to his death

The actor - who was best known for playing Dawson Leery in the hit TV series Dawson's Creek - died on Wednesday (11.02.26) after being diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer back in August 2023 and now a new report has suggested he was writing a book about his life prior to his passing.

Deadline.com reports James was working on the memoir in between filming a role on Legally Blonde prequel TV show Elle and appearances on The Masked Singer and Prime Video comedy Overcompensating.

Sources told the website James was working on the book "in addition to the quality time he was spending with family and staying connected to friends and fans."

The website added: "It is unknown at this time how far he got into writing, or if there are any plans to publish posthumously."

It comes after James' widow Kimberly Van Der Beek - the mother of his six children - set up a crowdfunding page to raise funds to help her cover expenses following the actor's death.

A message posed on the GoFundMe page reads: "James Van Der Beek was a beloved husband, father, and friend who touched the lives of everyone around him. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, James passed away on February 11, 2026 leaving behind his devoted wife, Kimberly, and their six wonderful children.

"Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care.

"In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James's medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time.

"The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead. Your generosity will help cover essential living expenses, pay bills, and support the children's education.

"Every donation, no matter the size, will help Kimberly and her family find hope and security as they rebuild their lives. Thank you for considering a gift to support them."

The fund had topped $1 million by Thursday morning (12.02.26).
