John Davidson has "questioned" why the BAFTA production team's decision to seat him near a microphone

The Tourette's campaigner, whose life inspired the film I Swear, was in attendance at the 79th British Academy Film Awards on Sunday (22.02.26) when he shouted a racial slur as Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting a prize on stage, and he has opened up about the evening and his condition.

He told Variety: "StudioCanal were working closely with BAFTA, and BAFTA had made us all aware that any swearing would be edited out of the broadcast.

"I have made four documentaries with the BBC in the past, and feel that they should have been aware of what to expect from Tourette's and worked harder to prevent anything that I said - which, after all, was some 40 rows back from the stage - from being included in the broadcast.

"As I reflect on the auditorium, I remember there was a microphone just in front of me, and with hindsight I have to question whether this was wise, so close to where I was seated, knowing I would tic."

John admitted he "felt a wave of shame and embarrassment" as a result of his tics, which are involuntary and don't represent his personal views.

He added: "When my coprolalia tics came out, my stomach just dropped. As always, I felt a wave of shame and embarrassment hit me all at once.

"You want the floor to swallow you up. I wanted to disappear. I wanted to hide - just get away from all the eyes."

John pointed out that there were other moments in the night besides the N-word where his tics took over.

He added: "For example, when the chair of BAFTA started speaking on Sunday, I shouted, 'Boring.'

"On Sunday, Alan Cumming joked about his own sexuality and, when referencing Paddington Bear, said, 'Maybe you would like to come home with me, Paddington. It wouldn't be the first time I have taken a hairy Peruvian bear home with me.'

"This resulted in homophobic tics from me and led to a shout of 'paedophile' that was likely triggered because Paddington Bear is a children's character."

He noted he "ticked perhaps 10 different offensive words on the night of the awards", rather than "one single slur".

He said: "Tourette's can make my body or voice do things I don't mean, and sometimes those tics land on the worst possible words.

"I want to be really clear that the intent behind them is zero. What you're hearing is a symptom - not my character, not my thought, not my belief."

The BAFTAs took "full responsibility" in a statement after the ceremony, and apologised to everyone involved for "a very difficult situation".

They added: "Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage at the time, and we apologise unreservedly to them, and to all those impacted.

"We would like to thank Michael and Delroy for their incredible dignity and professionalism.

"During the ceremony, John chose to leave the auditorium and watch the rest of the ceremony from a screen, and we would like to thank him for his dignity and consideration of others, on what should have been a night of celebration for him."

The BBC also apologised for the incident being broadcast, and later removed the ceremony from iPlayer.

Meanwhile, a source told the Metro newspaper that Michael, was "repulsed by the outburst", and Delroy told Vanity Fair that the pair "did what we had to do" on stage, but he wishes "someone from BAFTA spoke to us afterward".
