Neil Patrick Harris was "bummed" after Uncoupled never got a second season

The How I Met Your Mother actor has opened up about Netflix's decision to scrap his romantic comedy series - which was created by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman - after one season in 2023, before Showtime revealed plans to keep the series going.

In March 2024, Showtime confirmed season two wouldn't be going ahead.

Neil told The Hollywood Reporter: "I was bummed.

"I think Uncoupled season two would have been a lot of fun to do and would have been a different tone.

"Season one was a lot of breakup heartache and trying to find yourself and right a listing ship.

"I don't know why I'm doing all these pirate metaphors, but season two was going to be a bit more positive.

"I will say I was a little surprised - since it was so close to going - that it didn't end up shifting elsewhere."

In the original eight-episode run, Neil played a gay man in his 40s trying to navigate single life in New York City after being dumped by his partner of 17 years.

The 52-year-old star revealed the scripts had been written for more episodes, but plans came to an abrupt end.

Asked what change, he said: "I don't really know. I was surprised by it all because we were far along.

"They had written all the scripts for season two, which I'd read. They had been in the casting process - we were right in the middle of figuring out who should be this or that boyfriend... what about this person?

"Offers were out, and then, all of a sudden, it just didn't happen."

In 2023, Showtime underwent some changes itself, as Chris McCarthy took over from Gary Levine and Jana Winograde.

He was later let go after David Ellison became CEO and chairman of Paramount Skydance over the summer.

Neil said: "We live in a world where a lot of peoples' jobs shift in position, and what one group or team or person is championing to be the mast on this boat, there's suddenly a new captain of the boat and they want their own IP to be their thing.

"I don't know if that's the case. I'm not speaking cryptically, I honestly don't really know."

The actor also reference creator Darren Star's changing circumstances, as his overall deal moved from Paramount to Universal last year.

He added: "I also know that Darren Star wound up with an overall deal during that same time with another big parent company and I don't know if that played into it."
