The West Indies have reached 49 without loss to survive to stumps on the second day of the first cricket test against New Zealand in Hamilton after the hosts declared at 519 for seven after tea

The efforts of the four-prong pace attack faced plenty of work to justify the declaration and time spent off their feet.

That came courtesy of Kane Williamson's highest test score of 251 - the first first-class innings he has played since March 2nd, after a nine-week diet of Twenty20 in the Indian Premier League and two subsequent weeks in quarantine.

He acclimatised quickly and, to the West Indies credit, they swarmed to offer congratulations after his dismissal.

Like the Friday afternoon walk-up crowd offering a standing ovation, the visitors know a masterclass when they see one.

Kyle Jamieson also reached his maiden test half-century in his third innings, finishing on 51 not out after a 94-run seventh-wicket partnership with the captain.
