Police investigating the deaths of Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa say they have identified a "significant" piece of evidence as they continue to examine the circumstances surrounding their deaths

Gene, 95, and his spouse, 63, were found dead in their Santa Fe home on 26 February - and their bodies, along with that of one of their dogs, were discovered in separate rooms of the property, partially decomposed and mummified

Santa Fe sheriff Adan Mendoza has now said: "We're looking at (the pills) specifically, and other medications possibly in the residence."

Police confirmed there were no immediate signs of foul play but described the circumstances as "suspicious enough" to ex ecute a search warrant on the residence.

Authorities believe the couple may have died around 10 days before they were found.

Sheriff Mendoza said Gene's pacemaker stopped working on 17 February.

The results of autopsy and toxicology tests are pending.

Investigators discovered a prescription bottle and scattered pills near Betsy's body in the bathroom, which they have now classified as "important evidence".

The medications found were used to treat thyroid conditions and high blood pressure.

A police document described Betsy as "decomposed with bloating on her face and mummification in her hands and feet", while Gene showed "the same signs of decomposition".

Detectives are examining whether Gene may have suffered a sudden fall, as a walking cane and a pair of glasses were found near his body in the kitchen.

Betsy may also have collapsed, as a portable heater was discovered on the floor near her head.

The local fire department and utility company found no evidence of a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities have reassured residents that there is "no immediate danger to anyone".

Three dogs were found at the scene.

One was discovered dead in a bathroom closet near Arakawa's body, while the other two were found alive and in good health, one inside the home and the other outside.
