Finneas O'Connell's marriage proposal taught him he isn't cut out for a life of crime

The 28-year-old musician popped the question to Claudia Sulewski earlier this month after seven years of dating, and he admitted keeping his plans a secret for so long "ate [him] alive" and riddled with concern that she'd find the engagement ring before he'd have the chance to present it to her

Speaking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Finneas said: "I mean, I'm very relieved that it happened. I feel like it really taught me that I'm not cut out to rob banks or steal cars or something because I was keeping a joyous, happy secret for several weeks, and it ate me alive.

"And I was lying in bed at night thinking about where the ring was and her not finding ... whatever it was. And this is a nice thing that I'm keeping secret."

Finneas and Claudia announced their engagement by sharing a number of photographs from his romantic sunset proposal.

In a joint Instagram post last week, they wrote: "forever and ever 9.22 (sic)."

The photo carousel featured images of the couple sharing a smooch on a mountain hilltop, as well as Finneas - who makes music under his first name - and Claudia riding in a helicopter, and his fiancee showing off her sparkly engagement ring.

And the upload sparked thousands of congratulatory messages in the post's comments section, including from their famous friends.

TV personality Amanda Kloots, 43, wrote: "Omg YOU GUYS!!!!! Congratulations!!!! (sic)"

Singer Renee Rapp, 25, penned: "Holy s*** congratulations."

And Influencer-and-entrepreneur Paige Lorenze, 27, penned: "Omg!!!"

Finneas - whose sister is 23-year-old singer Billie Eilish - met Claudia on a dating app in 2018, and they quickly fell for one another.

A year later, the 10-time Grammy award-winning artist revealed he penned the song Claudia just hours after meeting his now-fiancee.

He told Buzzfeed at the time: "I wrote the song Claudia about Claudia the day that I met Claudia, and I sent it to her the night that I met Claudia.

"I sent her the first part, and she texted me back, 'You're trouble,' and then the chorus, which is the, 'I'm in trouble now,' part.

    "I was like, 'Oh, that's - cheers!'"

Also in 2019, Finneas and Claudia bought a house together and rescued a dog, a pitbull named Peaches.

The singer's 2022 song Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa was also about Claudia, and she starred-and-directed the music video for the track.

Speaking about the scene where the couple kiss, cuddle, and pose for a photo together in Paris, France, she told Vogue in July that year: "It's a gushy video, for sure!"

Finneas added: "We're pretty deep in it at this point-we've been dating for almost four years, so I think the cat's out of the bag."
