A rise in the number of dog attacks in Auckland is being put down to complacency among owners

A rise in the number of dog attacks in Auckland is being put down to complacency among owners

The council says it's received 12 reports of attacks on children this year, as it launches a new campaign to drive down attacks.

It's advising owners not to allow dogs to roam beyond their owner's property, have them de-sexed, and keep them controlled at all times.

Council animal management manager Elly Waitoa says it's disappointing that not all owners cooperate when they follow up on reports.

She says some people will put their dog into hiding and victim blame, but some will be genuinely remorseful and assure them it won't happen again.
