Stevie Wonder insists his blindness lets him "see people in the spirit of them"

The 75-year-old music legend jokingly dismissed wild, long running rumours that he isn't actually blind, while opening up on why he sees his disability as a "blessing"

Speaking during a recent concert in Cardiff, Wales, Stevie told fans: "I must say to all of you, something that I was thinking, 'When did I want to let the world know this?'

"But I wanted to say it right now. You know there have been rumors about me seeing and all that? But seriously, you know the truth.

"Truth is, shortly after my birth, I became blind.

"Now, that was a blessing because it's allowed me to see the world in the vision of truth, of sight.

"See people in the spirit of them, not how they look. Not what colour they are, but what colour is their spirit?"

The Superstitious hitmaker previously revealed while his mother Lula Mae Hardaway initially struggled with him going blind, he always tried to stay positive.

During an episode of The Wonder of Stevie audiobook series last year, he said: "I was born. Shortly after that, I'm blind.

"My mother went through the different things, and so my experience with that was deep."

His mother used to cry "every night" after his diagnosis, and the Isn't She Lovely? singer tried to change her perception.

He recalled: "[I told her], 'Mama, you shouldn't cry, you're making my head hurt.'

"And I said, 'Maybe God has something for me that's bigger than all this'. History proved that true."

At another recent UK gig, Stevie used his platform to call out the world's leaders, insisting anyone in a position of power should be using their platform to "bring peace to all the world".

Speaking to the crowd during a concert in Birmingham in the UK on Monday (07.07.25), he said: "I believe we need the leaders of the world, to take advantage of what they've been given to do - to bring peace to all the world.

"I don't care who you are, you could be a president or a prime minister, it doesn't matter. Get your s*** together!"
