Te Pati Maori's Oriini Kaipara has paid tribute to the late Takutai Tarsh Kemp - after winning the Tamaki Makaurau by-election

Kaipara got almost double the votes of Labour's Peeni Henare.

The by-election was triggered by the death of Kemp in June.

Labour's Peeni Henare conceded with about 90 percent of the vote counted.

He thanked supporters for their efforts and said they had created an inclusive and positive campaign.
