Serious gang tensions in two North Island regions are believed to have been sparked by drugs and an internal power struggle

A Gang Conflict Warrant remains in place in parts of Manawatu, Horowhenua, and Hawke's Bay - after shots were fired at police in two separate incidents.

Police say the Nomads and Mongrel Mob have been involved in the dangerous gang activity.

A gang source has told our newsroom the violence comes at a time when methamphetamine supply and use is rampant.

They say there is also a power struggle unfolding within the Nomads - with senior members distancing themselves from the offending.
