Construction has begun on the Melling interchange on State Highway two in Lower Hutt.

The Roads of National Significance project will create a separated interchange at Melling and create a new bridge over the Hutt River.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop says it will create a safer, more resilient and accessible transport system in Lower Hutt.

The project's expected to be finished by 2031.
