Relief from Olympian Sam Tanner after a dead heat with 15-year-old training partner Sam Ruthe in the 1500 metres at the track and field national championships in Dunedin

Relief from Olympian Sam Tanner after a dead heat with 15-year-old training partner Sam Ruthe in the 1500 metres at the track and field national championships in Dunedin

The pair couldn't be separated by a photo finish - crossing in three minutes 44.31 seconds.

Tanner says he was eager to set the tempo in a bid to drag Ruthe through for silver.

The win marks Ruthe's second national title after winning the 3000 metres in February.

He'll bid to become the youngest man to run a sub-four-minute mile next week - with Tanner to assist as a pacer.
