Pendarves Limited has removed its product from shelves and is calling for anyone who has it to bin it or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.
New Zealand Food Safety's Acting Deputy Director-General Claire McDonald says product testing has found the presence of domoic acid, a neurotoxin produced by certain algae.
It can cause Amnesic Shellfish Poisoning in humans, which is characterised by nausea, diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, and in more serious cases neurological symptoms.
No illnesses have been reported to date.
