A new DOC trial hopes to manage increasing deer numbers in a remote part of Waikato

A new DOC trial hopes to manage increasing deer numbers in a remote part of Waikato

New Zealand Deerstalkers Association members will be able to fly into the Pureora Forest at a heavily discounted rate, with wavering landing fees to support the trial.

Hunters going into the bush will tell DOC what they're seeing, how many deer they shot, and also report back on the forest health.

Wild Animals Manager Mike Perry says high densities of deer is damaging native forests.

He says they can alter the long-term forest health, just by eating out the understory, and if there's too many, it can have trampling effects.
