New public health research has found drinking fluoridated water during pregnancy has no impact on birth outcomes
21 January 2026
International scientists collected birth data for more than 11-million babies born across 677 US counties.
The study finds no difference in the risk of adverse birth outcomes like prematurity - between counties with fluoridated water supplies and those that were fluoride-free.
It also saw no change to the risk - after counties introduced fluoride to their water systems.
The findings provide reassurance about the safety of community water fluoridation, during pregnancy.
