The 50-year-old's on trial in Wellington - and has pleaded not guilty to five charges of murder and two of arson.
In court, it's been revealed he was hospitalised nine times over the past 25 years due to paranoid schizophrenia.
Herald Reporter Melissa Nightingale says the man is pursuing a defence of insanity.
She says for that to work he needs to prove that he didn't know lighting the fire was morally wrong.
