A death at Auckland's Mt Eden Prison has been referred to the coroner

The man died just after 7am on Thursday.

Mt Eden General Manager Dion Paki says staff made every effort to save him.

He says there is no indication the death is suspicious, but investigations are underway.

Other men in the unit and staff will have access to chaplains and other support.
