A warning to keep away from the coast, as extreme winds wreak havoc in the upper North Island

Ex-Cyclone Tam's felling trees, closing local roads, damaging transmission lines, as well as leaving tens of thousands without power across Auckland and Northland.

Ferries in Auckland Harbour are cancelled, while four departing and two arriving flights at Auckland Airport have been wiped this morning due to the conditions.

MetService Meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane says Northland could see swells up to six metres.

She says there's quite large swells and waves leading to possible coastal inundation and erosion.
