A bold tyre strategy has paid off for Supercars driver Matt Payne after winning race three of the Tasmania Super 440 by the third-closest margin the sport's history

He qualified 11th for the race, but opted to take his second compulsory pit-stop during a mid-race safety car, leaving him on his final set of tyres for the remaining 48 laps.

Payne held on by 0.05 of a second as championship leader Broc Feeney bore down.
