The driver who transported a man who died after attacking police in Auckland's Orere Point - on Sunday - has been charged over previous offending

His passenger wielded a metal pole and bit an officer - before being tazered, pepper sprayed and targeted by a police dog.

A post mortem is being carried out.

The 42 year old driver is accused of aggravated robberies at a Wairau Valley bowling alley and a Takapuna bar last month.

He faces charges of aggravated robbery and two commissions of a crime with a firearm.

It's also alleged he wore clothes resembling a police uniform during one robbery.
