The spine of the South Island faces another night of gusty winds and heavy rain

An Orange heavy rain warning's been issued for Canterbury High Country until midnight, and heavy rain's expected around Arthurs Pass.

MetService Meteorologist John Law says strong wind watches also apply for parts of Queenstown and Wellington this evening.

He says the strongest winds will be in Canterbury High Country - about 120 kilometres an hour in exposed places.

Motorists should take care on Lewis and Arthurs Passes tomorrow morning, when a road snowfall warning comes into effect.
