Paul Thomas Anderson took home the coveted Best Director prize at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards

The 55-year-old filmmaker scooped the accolade for One Battle After Another, taking the prize ahead of Ryan Coogler (Sinners), Guillermo del Toro (Frankenstein), Jafar Panahi (It Was Just an Accident), Joachim Trier (Sentimental Value) and Chloe Zhao (Hamnet).

In his acceptance speech, Paul dedicated the award in part to Warner Bros. chair Mike De Luca, who he first met over 30 years ago and said he had " "singlehandedly has supported me and the movies I wanted to make."

The director then got emotional as he paid tribute to assistant director Adam Somner, who passed away in late 2024 at the age of 57.

He said Adam's job title was "underselling it, what he did for me, for us and for this film."

He added: "He's what made making this so much fun, and make you [the cast] all seem to enjoy it as much as you have."

Earlier in the evening, Paul had taken the award for Best Screenplay.

He paid tribute to the cast and pledged to share the accolade with the people he had "magpied off" to pick up lines of dialogue.

He said: "I've written for a lot of people in this room and the moment when it gets out of your room and off the page and actors start saying it, that's when it gets great and I've had some great ones.

"Leo, Sean, Tianna, Benicio, Chase and especially Regina, who can't be here tonight, she's not feeling well. She was one of the first people I gave the script to. You're all great collaborators.

"Writers are magpies, we still all the bits and pieces that everybody says as best we can... Shayna McHayle is a great writer, she played JP in this movie, I stole a line from her - 'This pussy don't pop for you' - I owe her that one.

"I stole a lot of words from Thomas Pynchon who wrote a great book that we adapted. I stole a line from Nina Simone, someone asked her what freedom was and she said, 'No fear' - a pretty good like. So I share this with everyone I magpied off."
