Melissa Gilbert is facing an "extraordinarily difficult time" amid her husband Timothy Busfield's child sexual abuse charges

The 61-year-old actress has thanked her supporters on social media via her lifestyle company Modern Prairie after her husband was last week released from police custody pending trial on two counts of criminal sexual contact with a minor and one count of child abuse.

Melissa wrote in her Instagram message: "I'm sending you all my love and gratitude during this extraordinarily difficult time. Not only for Tim, me and our family, but in the collective heaviness so many of us seem to be carrying right now. Add an unexpected storm to the mix, and it can all feel like a bit too much."

The Little House on the Prairie star continued: "This season has reminded me, very clearly, how important it is to slow down, prioritise what truly matters, and allow ourselves moments of rest. Stepping back from the noise, the news, and even our daily responsibilities from time to time gives us space to recharge, reflect, and find our centre again."

Gilbert thanked her fans for the "love, patience and support" they have shown her and Busfield - who has denied the allegations against him - and has vowed to keep "moving forward".

She wrote: "Thank you, truly, for the love, patience, and support you continue to show Tim and me. Thank you for helping me to feel safer, more grounded, and deeply held by this extraordinary community of women here at Modern Prairie.

"I'll be easing back into things thoughtfully and with care - moving forward one step at a time. More to come, and so much gratitude always."

Melissa has stood by her husband following the allegations and stated that The West Wing actor "has the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known" in a letter to a judge after he handed himself into the authorities in New Mexico earlier this month.

The actress, who has been married to Busfield since 2013, wrote: "The reality is that Tim Busfield is my love, my rock, my partner in business and life. He is my comfort and my council. His joy, humour and quick wit bring sparkle to my life. Tim is, quite simply, the beating heart of our wild and wonderful extended family.

"I can tell you, and anyone, that I know Tim better and more intimately than anything in his life ever has. Conversely, he knows me in the same way.

"Tim has the strongest moral compass of any human I have ever known. He has dedicated his spiritual self to always being of service to others. He starts every day with kindness and compassion."
