Concerns over a potential electricity shortage this evening have been averted

Concerns over a potential electricity shortage this evening have been averted

Power companies responded quickly to a Transpower Customer Advice Notice ... as electricity demand soared at peak time

The notice was issued about 4pm, advising there was insufficient generation in the system - to meet the expected peak evening demand.

Transpower Chief Executive Alison Andrew says demand has been higher than predicted, and there's less wind generation available.

But she says producers quickly boosted generation to help make up for the shortfall
