An economist says the unemployment rate climbing over five-percent should be an economic wake up call to the Government

An economist says the unemployment rate climbing over five-percent should be an economic wake up call to the Government

Stats NZ says the rate increased from 4.8 percent to 5.1 percent in the final quarter of last year.

CTU economist Craig Renney says alongside a lack of jobs there are many part time workers who want more hours but can't get them.

He says Maori are the worst off.

Renney says the unemployment rate for Maori is now twice the general population.
