A 1-nil away defeat against Mexico has the Football Ferns coach marking his side's efforts as a "can do better"

A 1-nil away defeat against Mexico has the Football Ferns coach marking his side's efforts as a "can do better"

The only goal in the game was a gift from a corner 10 minutes in, after a defensive mix-up.

But Michael Mayne says the Ferns weren't at their best so while it was a defeat, there was plenty to take away from the Mexico game ... ahead of the rematch in three days' time.

And a certain World Cup in 20-27.

The two teams face off in a rematch in three days, before the New Zealand women head to the USA for another tough contest.

The All Blacks vice-captain's under no illusions as to what awaits in the first match of their end-of-year tour.

Departing for Chicago tonight, the team are readying for next weekend's test against Ireland.

Reflecting on several memorable clashes with the Irish in recent years, Ardie Savea says there's no doubt they're now one of their greatest rivals.

Subtle tweaks rather than wholesale changes for Henry Nicholls as he takes on an increased role with Canterbury this domestic cricket season.

The 33-year-old's been appointed captain for the first-class and 50-over competitions.

Cole McConchie will remain skipper for the T20 Super Smash.

Nicholls says a settled squad helps.

    The Ford Trophy starts tomorrow.
